Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel to Close For Electrical Work

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Regional Transit will temporarily close the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel for about a week for routine electrical maintenance.

The closure will begin at 1 a.m. on Monday, November 2, and continue through the start of service on Saturday, November 7.

During the closure, all inbound and outbound light rail service will detour through Allentown. A rail shuttle will operate between the outbound platform of Station Square and Allegheny Station to maintain service along the corridor.

Inbound buses will travel via Allentown; outbound service will use the Wabash Tunnel. The Wabash Tunnel's normal weekday directional operations will be suspended. During the morning peak period, the tunnel will not operate in the inbound direction as it typically does. Instead, it will remain in the outbound direction throughout the day for the entire week that the Transit Tunnel is closed.

This closure allows PRT crews to replace and repair the overhead electrical lines that power light-rail vehicles.

Riders should expect delays of up to 20 minutes during the closure.

The Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel is a critical link in PRT’s transit network, connecting South Hills Junction and Station Square Station. It’s the only tunnel in the country shared by both buses and light rail vehicles.
