I-376 Parkway East between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and Edgewood/Swissvale is scheduled to fully close for approximately 25 days from July 10 through August 3, 2026, as part of PennDOT’s Commercial Street Bridge replacement project. PennDOT expects major congestion and is encouraging commuters to use transit as an alternative.

Bus routes traveling from eastern Allegheny County may also experience delays due to increased traffic on detour routes.

What to Expect

PennDOT officials anticipate heavy traffic and delays along established detour routes, throughout the City of Pittsburgh, and in surrounding areas. PRT riders should expect delays to routes coming from the Eastern part of the service area.

What can you do

Recommendation #1: Use a bus route closest to your home/point of origin. 

By getting on a bus as early as possible along your journey, road space is available for other buses and cars; this keeps everyone moving faster. 

Recommendation #2: If you don’t have a bus route in your neighborhood, drive to a Park and Ride that serves the Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway: 

The busway is a dedicated bus-only roadway through the eastern half of Allegheny County which avoids intersections and traffic signals and only makes a few stops between Swissvale and Downtown Pittsburgh. If you are headed to Downtown, Oakland, Shadyside, or East Liberty, this will be the most reliable option.
